I’ve been busy the last couple days working on a new website/blog/indian fun zone. It’s up at indigen.tumblr.com if anyones interested. I’ve been wanting to start up a magazine for awhile, or at least an online magazine. So I’m just trying stuff out. The main problem I’ve been having is what to focus on. At least with this Indigen one, I’m going to try to focus on Indians, but if I were to ever put out an actual magazine I would most likely want it to be a music magazine.
So check out Indigen if you will. The layout is simple and focuses on the content, which would be a good thing if the content was good. It’s definitely still a work in progress, but maybe something good will come out of it.

Demockratees is a business, started up by independent artist Ryan Red Corn, specializing in political t-shirts. Here are a few of my favorites.

NAICA’s spring edition is up starting today, or yesterday. There are a couple articles surrounding Indians and identity. Primarily a lengthy one on the status of Indians in media and the romance novel. The article lays out several stereotypes Natives face from a world that learns about Indians through Dances With Wolves and those don’t litter commercials with the Italian guy dressed like an Indian that’s always crying cause people like to throw trash on his land.
It is interesting that stoicism is a big part of the Native identity. The proud and noble Indian never shows emotion. People come to need that when watching Indians on the big screen. I also learned why Indians are so popular to romance writers. I guess it stems from colonial life where the puritans had things locked down with forced morals and all their women were left longing for the wild Indian. Or something to that effect. Whatever it is, it’s good press for us Indian guys. Though I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an Indian with a six pack and good posture.
In the spotlight section NAICA focuses on artist Yatika Fields. A Native painter living in Brooklyn. His art is up in a gallery in Santa Fe and he has exhibitions in Brooklyn. Also, there’s an interview and review on a documentary called Making the River, focusing on a Native serving prison time for allegedly stabbing a prison guard. It might be interesting.
There’s more stuff too so head over to NAICA and read through everything. Read the back issues. Love it. Tell your friends.
